As I mentioned in my previous entry, I have dotted Dichondra all around my backyard. I have done this as it is a great lawn substitute.
One patch which I put in a year ago, came from a fellow green thumb. See the patch in the picture above. Originally it was only 10cm in diameter. It not only survived the heat wave, but thrived and is a patch that extends to a meter by half a meter.
Without disturbance, it's natural height can be up to 10cm, but if it is in direct sunlight and is walked on regularly, it will adjust itself and become a low carpet. Also, if it is growing in amongst lawn, it can be mown to get the same adjusting effect.
I love to walk on it bare foot. It is cool and very enticing, especially on a hot day.
In terms of maintenance, I watered it a little on the hottest days. I have never fertilised it, but it may have got some splashes of worm tea as I watered the veggie bed. Seems to me to be a great survivor.
So the small patches I transplanted yesterday should just about cover the entire "lawn" area in about a year. That area is slightly bigger than the hills hoist.
I am looking forward to walking barefoot to put the washing out!
