One of my compost bins is in rest mode, and is doing ok. The other has not been doing so well - often too dry and not composting as quick as I would like it to.
I recently heard of a way to improve the Dalek-style bins, of which I have two. Most of the better bins and the bay-style bins have a great amount of air flow, and this is the missing ingredient in my bins.
So, because I needed to move the bin to allow access to the intended chook house, I thought it was timely to put the improvements in place, a 2-step process.
But the bin is 2/3 full! So there was a large amount of semi-decomposed compost to shovel both out and back in! Tired now!
Part 1: After the bin was emptied, I used the power drill to add holes down the sides and on the lid of the Dalek. You can see these in the photo below.
I think the biggest difference between this bin and the other one is the amount of sun. So I am going to put a short vertical garden bed in front of this bin to reduce the amount of evaporation through heat. Then the worms might stay and do their thing (and it won't be as visable!)
Yay! Big job done.
